Azithromycin Dihydrate

Azithromycin is a semi-synthetic antibiotic of the azalide class. Azithromycin is a popular treatment choice in veterinary medicine for many types of infections including dermatological infections, urogenital infections, respiratory tract infections, and otitis media.

As an azalide, azithromycin is a broad-spectrum antibacterial agent that acts bacteriostatically. Azithromycin has activity against many bacterial species including Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Lyme disease. Azithromycin is active against gram-positive, gram-negative and some anaerobic bacteria, in addition to erythromycin-resistant bacteria, some other microorganisms.

Azithromycin is also used to reduce numbers of viral papillomas (viral warts) in dogs. Azithromycin is often used for cats with chronic nasal disease/upper respiratory infection.

The most-common side effects in all species are gastrointestinal. Vomiting can occur in dogs.

Azithromycin is a white or almost white powder, easily soluble in anhydrous ethanol and methylene chloride, practically insoluble in water. Azithromycin is readily soluble in fats.
